VA039 DeWalta – The Antiparallel EP

This Ep was formed with a concept in mind that involves a natural phenomenon occurring in various/different fields of science and nature – Anti-parallelism.

As the word suggests, anti-parallelism describes the natural relationship between two occurrences, objects or even non-material things, that are virtually identical and yet oriented in different directions. During the time the music was made I was researching natural phenomenons like this one. Naturally, this became part of the nucleus, fabric and inspiration for this work.

In genetics, for example, if the “antiparallelity” is corrupted during the process of DNA replication it is called a mutation. This mutation can be anything from totally inconsequential to critical for the survival of the whole living organism. A double helix of DNA contains two helixes, that are naturally anti-parallel to one another.

In physics this could be two of the same objects moving through space and time in opposite directions – just like the instruments or parts of a beat in electronic music production. So metaphorically speaking, anti-parallelism holds a natural balance to keep it safe and stable.

Although this might sound all very conceptual and theoretical this music is obviously just what it is – It is not intended to teach math, physics or biology in any way. The above mentioned aspect has simply found its way through my head and might have led to a piece of music that somehow, at least for me, is connected to these thoughts. It might evoke something very different for you.

I am entirely thankful for life, love, music and the support of the people around me.

Special thanks to Frieder Klaris with whom I collaborated on the track ‘Fromsidetoside.

Thanks for listening!
David Koch, DeWalta

VA034 Family Values EP

After the digital release of the 8-track ‚Family Values’ compilation late summer this year, Vakant is ready to follow up with a ‘Family Values EP‘ on vinyl this autumn. 4 selected tracks have made it onto the black gold, even we`re loving each tune like a mother loves her umh.. eight children.

Mathias Kaden presents a 2010 edit of his first ever solo release ‚Circle Pit’ (VA004!), followed by DeWalta’s deep but yet bouncing ‚Stringer Bell’ string experience.
On the flip, this EP opens up with Nico Purman`s ‚Xpress Yourself’ which lands somewhere between Rick James and Francois K, followed by Alex Smoke`s freaky ‚I-73 Night’ which, to quote Vakant pal Tolga Fidan, is ‚A reminder of how dance music should have been if it hadn’t gone generic…its punk.`We agree.

Tis the season for grilling, afternoon beers in the park, and the family reunion. What better way to spend a Sunday then getting into a fight with your drunk uncle over hot dogs and questionable shorts \ socked footwear combinations?

Tis also the season for Vakant the label, the mythos, the family to reunite and drop the blazing ‘Family Values’ compilation for your late summer revelry.

The unmixed compilation starts off with our distant Argentinean cousin Nico Purman. His ‘Xpress Yourself’ lands somewhere between Rick James and Francois K. Second is bro wonder Tolga Fidan who continues to impress with his ‘Linnz’ contribution. Not one to leave all the fun to the kids, Godfather Alex Smoke (VA001) gives his army of robots free rein and out the other end comes ‘I-73 Nightʼ, freaky yet reassuring like advanced techno should be. Rounding out the first half is our other prodigy DeWalta whose favorite pastime happens to be breaking subwoofers. His deep yet bouncing ʻStringer Bellʼ is sure to result in a run on replacement woofer cones.

The wise and the freaky family elder Robag Wruhme (VA002) bestows upon us ʻKuttenrolch 1996ʼ, a light and airy electro tinged piece produced solely on a Korg Trinity in 1996 while sounding just as fresh as if produced yesterday. Next up is visiting uncle by way of marriage Anthony Collins who imparts ʻBoys Sometimes Cryʼ showing his depth, musicality, and maturity. Then everyoneʼs brother Mathias Kaden presents us with a 2010 edit of his own first ever solo release, ʻCircle Pitʼ (VA004) which is as sick as the original was in 2005. Finally comes our Bavarian son Dario Zenker who puts a big red ribbon on the ʻFamily Valuesʼ package with perhaps his slickest, sexiest, and expansive track to date with ʻApollo 910ʼ.

So enjoy the Vakant familyʼs tech house fruits, partake in its freaky family love, but please try not to get burned.

VA021: DeWalta – Salgaro/Farina

  1. va021 Salgaro
  2. Farina

Like a proper immigrant family enjoying the life of culturally greener pastures, the Vakant family continues to grow in Berlin. Closely following the exponential trend of mergers and acquisitions in the Multi National Corpo Borg, Vakant Heavy Industries signs the third in a series of new talent to the team. Berlin’s DeWalta a.k.a. David Koch, long time friend of Vakant, has completed assimilation into the freaky fold.

David comes from that lofty echelon of actual musicians, having finished his degree in jazz and classically trained in piano and saxophone. He also runs his own label Meander with 2 friends. We don’t know exactly where this 23 year old youngin came from but who cares, the tracks on his debut Vakant EP hit you on the bootay like a studded fraternity hazing paddle on hell week. There aren’t even words we can find to describe the bass presence on this record.

A side ‘Salgaro’ is about as obese as a track can get. It’s happy, it’s huge, it’s pan ethnic, it’s sensitive, it’s irreverent. It’s so good it was immediately used for Onur Ozer’s up coming club DJ mix CD.

On the AA side ‘Farina’ lives. It’s freakier, it’s smoother, it’s quirkier, its cup runs massively over. We are talking insulin shock plump. We can’t even identify which genres it spans. It sounds like the amalgamation of everything currently succulent and lots more that will be.

Much to our chagrin and to the dismay of sound system technicians the world over, soon to be replacing broken woofers, we are quite impressed DeWalta’s Vakant debut indeed.
